Terrestrial Insect Dry Flies

Ants Bees Crickets
Attractors Beetles Grasshoppers

Ants, bees, beetles, crickets, hoppers and termites are insects, which live on land. Their heavier build makes them ill equipped for being on water. Any terrestrial insect, which lands on the water, immediately panics and thrashes wildly. After drowning, they usually water log and sink.

Since terrestrial insects hatch on land, their transport to the water might be more accurately termed a fall rather than a hatch. Falls of terrestrial insects can be a high percentage of the food chain for trout and other game fish. This may occur even on waters that are rich in aquatic life. Terrestrial insect falls become even more important in barren waters such as run-off streams and alpine lakes.
