Copper, Brown

Copper Chartreuse Copper Green B.H. Brown

B.H. Olive

Flies, which incorporate beads, are heavier than water. They may be fished across the current on the swing, or dead drift along the bottom of the river.

One of the most consistently successful presentations is to cast the fly quartering up stream. Mend your line and leader so that the fly runs deep, dead drifted along the bottom. As it passes you, slowly raise your rod tip. This will mimic the action of a pupa rising to the surface to hatch. Very hard strikes can occur as the fly is rising. Start with slightly heavier than average tippet.

Copper Caddis  Pupa, Brown
With its segmented copper wire body, this fly is tied to sink quickly.  It is a reasonable mimic of several darker caddis.  Try this pattern as a searching fly in the late afternoon before the main Hydropsyche hatch begins. Or use it as a dropper fly ahead of an Emergent Sparkle Pupa.

B.H. Caddis Pupa, Brown
Fished on the swing like a steelhead fly, this simple pattern is deadly when trout are picking off brown caddis pupas just below the surface.  Use a shock-loop, the same as you would if you were floating line steelhead fishing. The bead adds attractive flash which may look like a reflective gas bubble to trout.  Many caddis pupas develop gas bubble as they rise to the surface.  These reflective bubble are know keys to trout.

B.H. Caddis Pupa, Olive
This is the green version of the pattern above.  Many times these bead head flies will out fish Sparkle Pupas and many other more extravagantly tied pupa patterns.  The heavy bead keeps these flies from waking on the surface and often these flies are fished with a Sparkle Pupa as a trailer. The weight of the bead will also keep the Sparkle Pupa from waking. A waking pupa tells the trout a fly is phony.
