Christmas Island Bonefish Specials
This unusual tropical island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, some 1300 miles south of Hawaii, is part of the Republic of Kiribati. Christmas Island is old and has the largest land area of any coral atoll in the world (140 square miles). It is home to a huge population of bonefish which average 3-6 pounds. Some will exceed 10 pounds. There are nearly 650 square miles of bonefish flats surrounding Christmas Island. This supplies ample room for anglers staying at any of the three Island fishing resorts. Ten to thirty bonefish a day are the rule not the exception. Each of these flies has a short length of stiff mono protruding from the epoxy coated head. That piece of mono is designed to be used a number of ways. It acts like a sail or the tail of a kite. While the fly is falling toward the bottom the mono helps turn the fly so it lands with the hook pointed up. On many kinds of bottoms this makes the fly nearly snag-free. However, when fishing over certain kinds of vegetation the mono can create problems. Then you kink and bend it back the cover the point of the hook or remove it completely. The mono gives you options. |
