The ever-popular Gierach shares insights, musings, and countless stories from the profound to the funny to the downright absurd that he’s collected over a lifetime of fishing. His first book in 3 years, Gierach gives us a book that is wry, contemplative, and as lively as ever, as edifying as it is entertaining. 256 pgs.

From the Pacific Northwest to the Upper Midwest to the Canadian Maritimes, “America’s best fishing writer” (Houston Chronicle) shows us why life’s most valuable lessons—and some of its best experiences—are found while fly-fishing.

For John Gierach, fishing is always the answer—even when it’s not clear what the question is. He’s fished for steelhead in the Pacific Northwest, bull trout in British Columbia, bonefish in Mexico, and pike in the Upper Midwest. He’s even tried winter fly-fishing and braved the remote Alaskan wilderness. Through it all, he has nurtured his enduring love for the sport.

Traveling around North America, Gierach seeks out great fishing experiences with one goal in mind: to have a good time and maybe catch some fish. He talks about fashion in flies and fly-tying, about the mysteries of why certain flies work, and about the etiquette of fishing a popular spot. He reflects on how it feels to approach a new stream, acting nonchalant while experiencing intense excitement and anticipation. He also muses about fishing rods: “Although I own enough rods to build a picket fence around my property, I can sometimes be convinced that I need just one more.” And though Gierach loses some fish along the way, he never loses his passion and sense of humor.

A couple of things will dawn on you while you read this book:
Eastern Europeans have evolved a unique and extensive fly fishing tradition, and there are a lot of streams you would like to visit there.

The book of 116 pages of format A4, contains 159 colored photographs of nymphs and approximately 45 colored photographs of fishing. The book deals with the development of the Czech nymph from its early history to present. The Czech fly fishers are fishing in World Competitions and their fly designs and techniques have been successful in winning World Championships. Possibly the most important aspect of this book about Czech nymphing for American anglers, is the discussion of leader design, and Krivanec draws on the expertise of several successful anglers to describe their typical leader setup. This book is unique in its subject matter and presentation and has many insights that will make the reader a more productive angler. More than that, it proves that the sport of fly fishing forms a global brotherhood.

Format:  Hardcover
Pages:  180 pages
Trim Size:  12" x 12"
ISBN:  0-9817250-0-7

This is a picture book of one man's love of a river. No portrayal on the internet can do it justice.
We love Dan Callaghan for many things: his excellence & passion as a fly-fisherman, his life-long devotion & hard work for the fish & fisheries he loved, his eye as a photographer, his warmth & kindness, his delight in river otters, dippers, spring flowers, autumn leaves, & rivers.
Dan Callaghan, Oregon’s consummate natural photographer, is immortalized in this book on his river home, the North Umpqua. Dan had an inquisitive mind, a sharp artist’s eye, a touch of whimsy, & a tenacity for perfection. He captured the essences of the Umpqua River in all her glory during the best & worst of conditions. His art displays the splendor of the seasons; the bleak & startling beauty of winter, the rejuvenation of spring, the lushness of summer, & the unsurpassed brilliance of fall. Anglers at the height of their rhythm, intensity, & joy were preserved by his shutter. This spectacular photographic journey will bring you closer to the North Umpqua, closer to nature, perhaps closer to yourself.
This book deserves a place on any table where angler who really love rivers come to gather.

Nymphs for Streams and Stillwaters provides a sound understanding of the relationship between naturals and their imitations, and between those imitations and the trout. You'll learn what nymphs you should spend your time tying, you'll learn how to tie them, and most important, you'll learn where and how to fish them in order to catch more trout
Nymphs for Streams and Stillwaters is broken logically into four parts. The first part is an introduction to the way nymphing shapes itself with notes on streamside and lakeside observation, nymph selection based on what you observe, and recommendations on tools and materials for both basic and advanced methods for tying nymphs that take trout. The second part deals with the selection and detailed tying of all sorts of effective searching nymph patterns for moving water. The third part examines imitative nymphs for moving waters, tightly relating naturals to their imitations. The fourth part covers stillwater nymphs. Trout are ore often selective in lakes and ponds, and the things they eat in stillwaters are often unlike trout foods in rivers and streams.
Hughes takes a subject that has been considered complex and confusing and makes it understandable, presenting the information that you really need to improve your tying and your fishing. Nymphs for Streams and Stillwaters is destined to be the step-by-step reference to tying and fishing every nymph you'll ever need. Filled with good advice from a trusted master of the subject, it is the most thorough and enjoyable book about selecting, tying, and fishing nymphs that has ever been written.

Amateur or expert, every angler dreams of landing "the big one," but that's only part of the appeal of fly fishing. Because even when hours pass without a bite, nothing beats the rugged beauty of the surroundings. For both armchair travelers and avid outdoorsmen who may have already started a checklist of their own, Fifty Places to Fly Fish Before You Die maps out the meccas of the fly-fishing world.

Through in-depth interviews with the sport's acknowledged gurus, author Chris Santella goes beyond standard guides to convey the very essence of the recommended locations. Readers can vicariously cast mouse patterns to fifty-pound taimen in the wilds of Mongolia, wrangle with wily permit off the Florida Keys, and match the hatch on Montana's Armstrong's Spring Creek. Jardines de la Reina, Cuba (tarpon), the Zhupanova River, Kamchatka (rainbow trout), and the Rio Negro, Brazil (peacock bass) are also included.

The essays include a cultural and natural history of each site, along with colorful anecdotes based on the author's and authorities' experiences. With breathtakingly beautiful photos of the spots, many by celebrated fly-fishing photographer R. Valentine Atkinson, the book also provides adventurous anglers with enough travel-and-tackle information so that they, too, can start planning excursions to go fish around the globe.

Subject Category: Fly Fishing Enomology
Binding Type: Softcover, 264 pages, 8 1/2" X 11" format.
Retail Price: $39.95
ISBN: 1-57188-304-5
In their first book together since their 1981 classic Western Hatches, aquatic entomologist Rick Hafele and fly fishing author Dave Hughes, combine their extensive knowledge to describe in detail the widespread and diverse western mayflies, unraveling their mysteries, revealing how to identify them, how to match them, and how to fish their imitations.

Researched, written, and photographed over a period of more than twenty years, Western Mayfly Hatches covers all mayfly hatches important in the entire range of western states and provinces.  Color photos reveal the important aspects of each stage of each important mayfly hatch.  Scientifically accurate illustrations by artist Richard Bunse depict the details that will allow you to recognize key differences between species for both nymph and adult stages.  A series of fly patterns, from suggestive through impressionistic to imitative, are listed for each stage of each hatch.  The full dressing is given for each fly, and each is photographed in color by Jim Schollmeyer.

Also included is information on collecting and observing mayflies, mayfly behavior and natural history, fly-tying techniques, presentation methods for nymphs, emergers, duns, and spinners, plus much more.  Unique "hatch ranking tables" list the important aspects of each hatch, and provide a means for determining its importance relative to all other hatches.  Hatch charts show graphically the emergence period of each hatch throughout the year, and the time of day you might encounter the insect on the water being fed upon selectively by trout.

Includes more than 350 color photographs, 75 illustrations, and more than 175 fly patterns, You'll be amazed how much information you'll discover within the pages of this book.  Western Mayfly Hatches leaves no stone unturned.
