Mathias is a former javelin thrower and international javelin coach, now
working for the Norwegian Olympic Training Centre in Oslo. The biomechanics
of fly casting isn’t that different from that of javelin throwing and the
pedagogical aspects of elite sports works for fly casters as well. Mathias
has developed a concept for fly casting clinics based on principles from his
“real job”. This concept is used by the Norwegian Fishing and Hunting
Assocoation to educate and authorize fly casting instructors and Mathias is
responsible for both educating and authorizing them. He has also written a
book, presenting the concept to everybody from beginners to advanced fly
casters.
In 1985, Mathias became national head coach in Casting and he still is.
Lately, though, he has spent more time on competitions with fly fishing
equipment and is currently among the best casters in the world. In the last
World Championships in fly casting (Ireland-2006) he went home with two
silver medals. He has several Norwegian Championship gold medals and
Norwegian records. He competes with both single and double hand rods and
with overhead and spey casting techniques. |
