If you are going to fish the
Deschutes or Crooked River, Hwy 26 is the most direct
route from Portland to Central Oregon. Here is a good
way to check out the road conditions through the Cascade Mountain
Passes: |
|
Hatches: The Salmonfly/Golden Stone hatch is in full swing from
Maupin to Warm Springs. Fish close to the
bank, under overhanging vegetation and cash in. PMD and PED hatches have been strong
in the area around Maupin. Keep your eyes open for Green Drakes and Little
Yellow Stones, Little
Olive Stones. For the nymph fisher: Caddis Pupa,
Prince Nymphs
and Glo Bugs fished along the bottom. Look for Tan
Crane Flies most days. Midge hatches occur nearly every day. Many days there is "behavioral drift", which
means that many aquatic insects will be migrating along the bottom and be
available to feeding trout. Nymph fishing can be good all day. The above
situations are best covered with a floating fly line and all patterns are
fished drag free. Fishing wooly buggers deep on the swing with a fast
sinking tip is also a method that is producing some real nice trout. |

Other Information: The Deschutes is one of the great rivers in the Pacific Northwest. Much of it is open to angling year round. Few rivers in the world can boast as good endemic resident trout populations as the Deschutes. Add in big runs of summer and fall steelhead and you have one of the finest fisheries in the world. |
