Grindstone Lakes are about 100 miles east of Prineville, in the heart of Central Oregon. The lakes are surrounded by sagebrush plateau terrain with old growth juniper scattered about and pine forested ridges. The word that comes to mind when describing Grindstone Lakes area is "expansive". |
|
There are five lakes in this cluster that range from 25-62 acres. They
are inside the borders of the 800,000 acre GI Ranch. If you need a lot of
room around you, it's here. Antelope, Mule Dear, shore birds and water fowl abound. These lakes are very rich and offer many weed beds, shallow areas and springs for classic float tube and shoreline fly fishing opportunities. The prolific hatches include chironomids, callibaetis, and caddis. Also important are leeches, scuds, dragons, water boatmen and snails. Mid-season hatches of damsel flies can produce explosive dry fly fishing. The trout in these lakes grow fast and range from 1 1/2 pounds to over 10 pounds, with 3-6 pound average. They pull hard and often jump repeatedly. Beginners can expect good action while many seasoned veterans release double digit catches per day. After booking your trip to Grindstone Lakes, review our extensive selection of Trout Flies so that you have enough ammunition to be successful. |
